This page provides an overview of all legal information relating to RexyServer. Please read the linked documents carefully before installing or operating the software.
RexyServer is not a content provider. RexyServer does not host, store, stream, or provide access to any media content of any kind on any infrastructure we control. RexyServer runs entirely on your hardware and serves only the content you have placed on it.
You are the operator. You install and operate RexyServer on your own hardware. You are solely responsible for: the legality of your media library, the security of your server, the safety of any Tailscale or other network configuration you use for remote access, and compliance with the terms of any third-party metadata services you configure RexyServer to use.
Third-party metadata APIs. When RexyServer fetches metadata from third-party providers (ComicVine, Marvel, AniList, MyAnimeList, League of Comic Geeks, MangaDex, Google Books, Open Library, iTunes Search, Audnexus, or others), the API credentials are obtained by you, under your name, subject to those providers' terms of service. Some of these services have non-commercial-use restrictions; you are responsible for complying with whatever terms you agreed to when you obtained your credentials.

RexyServer is built on top of several open-source libraries. The complete legal text of every license, with per-package copyright notices, is shipped with RexyServer as a bundled Licenses.txt file accessible from Settings → Acknowledgements → "View Licenses…".
RexyServer is distributed as a direct download for macOS. Apple™, Mac™, and macOS™ are trademarks of Apple Inc. RexyServer is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Apple Inc. RexyServer is not distributed through the Apple App Store.
RexyServer is distributed alongside a Mac Catalyst helper application, RexyEPUBHelper.app. The two apps ship together in a single disk image and are intended to be installed side-by-side in /Applications. The helper is launched by RexyServer when a user opens an EPUB and provides the Readium-based reader UI. The helper is not distributed independently. Accordingly, all license attributions on this page apply to both RexyServer.app and the companion RexyEPUBHelper.app.
RexyServer's HTTP layer is built on Vapor and related packages from Qutheory, LLC. All are MIT-licensed:
Copyright (c) 2017-2025 Qutheory, LLC. Full MIT license text in the bundled Licenses.txt.
RexyServer's networking, cryptography, and asynchronous primitives are built on Apple's Swift Server Workgroup packages, all Apache 2.0 licensed:
Copyright (c) Apple Inc. and the respective project authors. Full Apache 2.0 license text in the bundled Licenses.txt.
RexyServer uses the Readium toolkit for EPUB and CBZ archive handling. The companion RexyEPUBHelper.app uses Readium for its entire reader UI. The following Readium packages and their transitive dependencies are linked:

RexyServer does not bundle any external command-line binaries. Several optional features rely on tools the user installs themselves via Homebrew (or any equivalent method):
brew install unar — The Unarchiver's command-line toolbrew install sevenzip — Igor Pavlov's 7-Zipbrew install atomicparsley — for embedding audiobook metadataNo library code from any of these projects is statically linked into or distributed with RexyServer. The binaries run as fully separate operating-system processes invoked at the user's discretion.
RexyServer can fetch metadata from the following public APIs. Each provider's data is governed by its operator's Terms of Service. Use of these services is optional — RexyServer runs without them. For services that require an API key or OAuth credentials, the user obtains those credentials directly from the provider under the user's own identity.
Cover artwork, summaries, and other metadata returned by these services remain the property of their respective owners. RexyServer does not modify, relicense, or redistribute that content — it is fetched at runtime, displayed to the user, and (where the user opts in) embedded into the user's own files.
